The lecture

Where the patient feels pain is not always where it starts.

LOOK BEYOND THE TOOTHSymptoms may mimic tooth pain even when the tooth is not the true source.
01Recognize pain patterns that do not fully match the dental findings
02Consider muscular, joint-related, neuropathic, headache, and other contributors
03Know when to investigate further, delay treatment, or refer

What happens when the tooth hurts, but the tooth is not the source? A patient may present with sharp tooth pain, unusual sensitivity, or discomfort that seems to travel between teeth. Another may describe pain extending into the ear, temple, or one side of the head. Sometimes the suspected tooth has already been treated, yet the pain remains or appears somewhere else.

These situations can be challenging when radiographs, pulp testing, and clinical findings do not fully explain the complaint. Not all dental pain originates from the teeth. Muscular referral, temporomandibular disorders, neuropathic pain conditions, headache disorders, and other sources of orofacial pain can produce symptoms that resemble odontogenic pain.

This prerecorded lecture helps dentists develop a broader clinical perspective, ask better diagnostic questions, and recognize when additional examination or interdisciplinary referral is appropriate before irreversible treatment.

What you will learn

Three clinical learning objectives.

01

Recognize clinical features of unexplained, referred, and potentially non-odontogenic pain that may mimic tooth-related conditions.

02

Identify additional questions and examination findings that can help differentiate possible dental, muscular, joint-related, and neuropathic contributors.

03

Determine when further investigation or interdisciplinary referral is appropriate before proceeding with irreversible dental treatment.

When the source of pain is unclear, a more complete examination can reveal what tooth-focused testing may miss.

Before You Restore: TMJ Essentials introduces a structured approach to examining the temporomandibular joints, masticatory muscles, mandibular movements, and occlusion.

The course supports the musculoskeletal and functional assessment component of this broader diagnostic process. It does not replace specialized training in neuropathic or other complex orofacial pain conditions.
